Staged : Candy Coated Teddy Tide

A model covered in candy, photographed by Ryan Yoon and styled by Hissa Igarashi.A model covered with stuffed animals, photographed by Ryan Yoon and styled by Hissa Igarashi.A model with a recycled Tide Bleach dress, photographed by Ryan Yoon and styled by Hissa Igarashi.Often when people think about set design they imagine elaborate stage sets with hoards of props and fixings. For the first issue of Virgine magazine, publisher and photographer Ryan Yoon together with stylist Hissa Igarashi create these sexy photos by substituting fashion with creatively layered, every day items, which evoke texture, depth and complexity.

I really like how the final result reflects the current trend for DIY (do it yourself).

Student Power : Folded Felt Table

A Folded Felt Table designed by Pratt Institute industrial design student Li-Rong Liao.

Folded Felt Table: Designed by Pratt Institute design student Li-Rong Liao. Built of folded cardboard and felt with a glass top, the table’s design was a result of Li-Rong’s experimentation with folding profiles that would result in a balance of structure and aesthetics.

This design is yet another result of Pratt partnering with furniture design firm Cappellini for their Perpetual Motion furniture design studio which challenges students to create pieces intended to inspire future design.

Born in war torn Yugoslavia, Serbian based designer and photographer Ana Kraš is as excited about design as she is about life. Her approach is practical, unpretentious, and delightfully inventive. Her designs are cleverly modern, and with names like “noodle” and “bonbons”  it’s obvious that this talented designer is eagerly forward thinking.

Ana, whom if I may, is a blond bohemian beauty, is also a humble and energetic designer whom I recommend you all keep an eye out for. Currently Ana travels between Belgrade Serbia and LA where she now lives and works. For more on her photography work click here.

These photos remind me of how I had once imagined my life as a dedicated climber and mountaineer with a special urge to be lost in the undiscovered America’s.  Nowadays I channel those thoughts into the rooms I design by infusing a constant sense of discovery for the people who are to live in them.

Bohemian Finds : Rustic Nouveau

A rustic art nouveau style willow chair design and made by American furniture designer Clifton Monteith.A rustic art nouveau style willow chair design and made by American furniture designer Clifton Monteith.Moon Viewing Chair: 1999 by American furniture designer and craftsman Clifton Monteith. Made of bent willow and aspen twigs, and like most of his work, it is rustic interpretation of art nouveau, better known as “rustic noveau”.

___

Often rustic works can be over-scaled and or to particular which makes them difficult to use eclectically. Yet all of Clifton’s work is so elegant and its details are in my opinion minimally influenced and therefore so easy to mix into any style interior. I can already see Vogue doing a chic fashion spread with the models sitting in some of these aesthetically American chairs.

After seeing the Alexander McQueen “Savage Beauty” exhibit this week, I can’t help but notice his influence on much of today’s fashion. Feathers, bones, and hair like materials have now transformed and become beautiful textural elements that are being applied to organically constructed pieces.

I look forward to seeing more of this happening in the world of interior design.

Ingenuity : The Endless Chair

Endless by Dirk Vander Kooij at DMY Berlin from Dezeen on Vimeo.

___

Most of you already know how important and thus trendy the word “green” or “Eco” has now become, specifically for the design and architecture industries. Although I am not a big fan of the “green movement” trend,  this Endless Chair, 2011 by dutch furniture designer Dirk VanDer Kooij is a perfect example of everything that does excite me about the more important “sustainable” integrities I am a much bigger fan of.

a – Its aesthetic is modern and futuristic.
b – The process can easily inspire similar technological ideas.
c – Its material is recycled but is also very beautiful.

A robot extrudes one continuous line out of plastic from recycled refrigerators. I think that the process (look at video above) is as beautiful as the chair itself. To me that is the ultimate inspiration.

Student Power : The Reflexion Chair

THe Reflexion Chair designed by Pratt Institute design student Arnold Chu.The Reflexion Chair: Designed by Pratt Institute design student Arnold Chu. Built of two-way mirrors in the silhouette of a diamond, with embedded LCD panels that serve as digital upholstery, which can ultimately provide unlimited color and pattern options.

This design was a result of Pratt partnering with furniture design firm Cappellini for their Perpetual Motion furniture design studio which challenges students to create pieces intended to inspire future design.

___

I really like how futuristic yet minimal this chair is and I agree with Chu who believes that “infusion of technology will be the future of furniture design.” This was also one of my favorite pieces at the ICFF 2011 show this year.

Thoughts : The Accident + Updates

Hello friends, fellow bloggers and readers. Last week my computer and backup was destroyed by a freakish virus and in the process I lost all my work and saved files from the past 9 years or so. Among the lost files were the posts I had prepared for the following two weeks and so while I try and recover some work and set myself back up again I hope you are all enjoying this wonderfully sunny + positive day.

Lately I have been working on some fun interviews with some really interesting designers and have also been preparing great new features to be posted on the blog soon. In the meantime, I hope you will continue to visit and please feel free to follow the blog on facebook, twitter, blog catalog, or bloglovin. Look at side bar for more info.

best,

Collectables : “Iridescent” Zsolnay Porcelain

A modern shaped iridescent colored porcelain dog made by Hungarian Company Zsolnay.Iridescent colored porcelain frogs made by Hungarian Company Zsolnay.A iridescent colored porcelain Owl made by Hungarian company Zsolnay.Personally I am not a big fan of figurines and yet lately I have been finding many vintage pieces that can easily pass for decorative or sculptural art. Often these porcelain or ceramic pieces are quite affordable and if your a tag sale junkie like me you can find great pieces for as little as five to ten dollars.

The pieces above are all animal themed and made in Hungry by Zsolnay. Because of their abstract quality and their iridescent metallic like colors, I think these will soon gain a renewed interest from both collectors and the general public.

In case your not up on the latest in color and design trends, shiny and organic are hot and in. Either way, one or two of these can be great accent pieces without making your home feel like”grama is havin a chachkie party.”
