Styled by Kate Phelan, and make-up by Sam Bryant.

___

The best way to describe these vivid fashion photos is that they are cleverly conceived, utilizing an obviously abandoned interior yet so minimally framed, making for the perfect backdrop to the whimsy of all her white outfits. Although Agyness is wearing the likes of Dolce and Gabbana, Ralph Lauren and Alexander McQueen , the clean approach to the all to familiar grunge trend may even be inspiring to my current willi-hipster neighbors.

Rare & Beautiful : The Rhino Desk

The Rhino Shaped Desk by French husband anf wife, artist and designer Claude and Francois-Xavier Lalanne.Large Rhino Shaped, brass metal desk, ca. 1967, designed and built by french artist and designer François-Xavier Lalanne.

___

François-Xavier worked together with his wife Claude, both artists who sculpted with metal,  her works mostly inspired by plant forms, and his, by those of animals. In general; all the work of this husband-wife duo is as beautiful as it is rare and in particular this desk is as clever as it is handsome.

After all said and done, how can anyone not be inspired by any artist couple working together, sharing their joy and their love?

Soft and bright, tall and inviting, fresh and playful, those are only some of the words that would best help me describe this imaginative installation. Because of their monumental size, one feels humbled standing underneath them, yet because of their delicate skin one still feels invited to play and explore its existence.

Student Power : Sway – An “Encompassing Environment”

Sway art installation by SCI-Arc first year students and porfessors Nathan Bishop, Eric Kahn, and Jenny Wu.Sway: 2010, made of 228 bundled steel rods, bolted and joined with flexible wire.

___

Designed and built by 37 first year SCI-Arc students, led by professors Nathan Bishop who refers to the installation as an “encompassing environment,” Eric Kahn and Jenny Wu of the 1A Studi0. More here.

Personally this reminds me of the delicate grid of telephone and trolley line cables that used to cover many or the great American cities. I love how futuristic this feels and wish I could of experienced the installation.

Thoughts : Thank You FDNY

Early American fire fighters in NYC.

Surreal is how I would best describe feeling after running into a house this past weekend who’s chimney was up in flames and who’s roof was ready to catch. I wasn’t sure if anyone had yet realized, but as I entered the owner jumped up, perplexed, first noticing that smoke had just begun to fill his home. Frantically he ran out not sure what to do, and all silly me could bare to ask was for him to help me get water ready to pour around the flames. Shortly the local volunteers arrived and awkwardly I left unsure what I was to do. Surely I had wanted to help, but was I supposed to wait for the pros whose job it was to take care of?

On Sunday I drove to hike some trails which I soon learned was dedicated to fallen Sep 11, FDNY fire fighter Michael Ciaiola.

Now back home in NYC, I can’t help but wonder how is it that we so graciously celebrate designers and builders of beautiful homes and yet those who stand by to save them and the people inside are only remembered by something as tragic as the falling of the twin towers. Personally I think it would be nice that every house that is ever saved bear a plaque including the names of all those involved. Moreover, I am surprised that they do not yet have a reality show of their own.

Thank you FDNY and thank you to the rest of the worlds fire fighters.

Ingenuity : Paper Clip Cubism

Using their plywood prant boxes, IKEA cleverly arranges them into a modern cubist storage unit.Using their plywood prant boxes and office paper clips, IKEA cleverly arranges them into a modern cubist storage unit.Ikea recently posted this clever, tribute to cubism storage solution on their Swedish design blog. Combine several of their PRÄNT boxes, paint the inside of a few with your favorite colors (they used bright pastels) and join them together using easily found black office paper clips.

If you are on an even tighter budget, try this with a bunch of recycled cardboard boxes. This would even work perfectly as a fun Easter display. Begin by using the technique above, then randomly and minimally fill the boxes with a variety of Easter candy and holiday figurines.

You don’t have to be a hipster or hip hop junkie to appreciate these minimal yet super detailed photos. They are large prints, fairly priced and they would work well in both commercial and residential interiors. If you think they are to masculine for your rather feminine taste; paint your walls a flat pale pink, add a white shag rug, any vintage or ornate sofa and hang one of these amazing prints on the wall. Let me know if that doesn’t amp up your shabby’ punk girl volume.

For more info on his upcoming book follow @boomboxlove on twitter.

Ironically, most of you may already know photographer Lyle Owerco from the September 11 Time magazine cover which featured his photo of the world trade center attack.

Thoughts : Pricey Decorators???????

___

Genuinely I am upset by the video recently released by Design Within Reach promoting their new “DWR 3D Room Planner”. I think the idea of people being able to plan their own room is clever, although ehem ehem their options are limited to the DWR catalog, it surely is a great way to promote their brand of, let me remind you, modern reproductions. Yet introducing the tool by first stating that you no more need a “pricey decorator” isn’t as clever a tag line about saving consumers money and is rather more effective at labeling the decorating/design business as unnecessary luxury.

Yes it is true that services offered by the great decorators of the past were luxuries only affordable to the wealthy and such, yet today, far many more individuals rely on their modestly priced decorating and design fees to helps sustain themselves as well as help families cohesively and affordable design their homes. Besides doesn’t DWR rely on decorators and designers who shop at a discounted price and who’s clients end up paying the same retail price after all, letting the not so pricey decorator make a living too.

Some of you may think I am over thinking the matter, but in truth, it was uncalled for. And if like me you are following the latest trend of bashful advertising you too may realize that the way of the decorator isn’t threatened by its falsely perceived unappealing fees but rather by another industry that is slowly trying to monster its way toward a brand culture of ultimate supremacy.

Sadly integrity has long lost its way in the culture of falsely perceived American companies. I truthfully believe that the few individual companies who have been making it a point to innovate ways how the many more business can grow along with their own success are growing because of their ever greater creative ability to think more broadly then the rest. The face of American industry is soon to become stronger then ever, mainly because of its integrity.

*Please Note: I am not upset at DWR but rather I am upset at their poor choice of words for the opening of the video I noted above.

Basic admission is free.

___

Whether you grew up with American quilts or not, and whether you think you may or may not be interested, I urge you all to go see this free exhibit. Not only is this a rare opportunity to see a vast collection of pure Americana, all amassed over three very different centuries, but just as intriguing is the way they are displayed and possibly is one of the most interesting visual and spatial experiences exhibited in New York City this year.

Without judgment, I urge my twenty something year old peers to go see this exhibit as you will be inspired and will be more prepared for the trend wave of new American quilting that is starting to show up from some very talented, young and edgy designers all across the country.

I have been working on some modern bohemian quilt ideas myself and seeing the exhibit really helped me understand the complex details and techniques that these somehow simple blankets demand.

Rarely do I ever like anything inspired by comic fiction, but this chair, although its design is almost a literal interpretation of its obvious inspiration, really it stands on its own and because of its minimal and sophisticated details it is now on my list of pieces to hopefully one day own.

Although not the focus of the exhibit, as a designer I found the recycled elements of most of the pieces particularly intriguing both as inspiration and to see how easily one can use every day items and possibly trash to make the most beautiful of things.
