On Display : Degas and the Nudes

Nude drawings and paintings by French artist Edgar Degas at the Boston Museum of Fine Art.Degas And The Nude : Now on display at the BFA Boston until Feb 5, 2012.

___

You have to go and see this amazing exhibit to begin to understand how art will shortly transform our current conditioned expectations of sex and our perception of the idealized female figure into one that is more, shall we say… natural! Very exciting!!

The exhibit includes a large collection of hand colored monoprints, that are paralytically intimate, revealing, evocative, and yet I think, hardly promiscuous. They were Degas very-private sketches and although not meant to be shared with the public, seeing them helps you to perceive those most intimate moments as experiences of life rather then exploitations of sex. At least that is how they made me feel.

If you visit; please let me know what you thought of it all.

Inspiration : Graffiti Door #2

A unique graffit door in Williamsburg, Brooklyn NY.Just a few blocks from me on Broadway in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; a uniquely scribbled, graffiti painted front door.

___

Design Thoughts:
Although I often post graffiti inspiration, I really am not a big fan of the jungled scribbles that to often illegally cover the private homes and shops in cities worldwide. Still I do find the personalization of the graffiti effect to be paralytically inspiring when it seems to be deliberately wanted and when they are particularly unique in shape, form or colors.

The black painted door above has small handwritten names and messages which collectively adds a nice porous like effect and somehow reminds me of abstractly designed lace. I imagine that everyone who has ever lived there has left their name scribbled on that door, and everyone that ever moves in is greeted by a crowd of welcoming memories.

Design Ideas:
Paint you front door in a coat of chalkboard paint and let everyone see your ever changing graffiti genius…

Chranukkah came and went, and although there was no fall of the much anticipated but generally dreaded white snow, gifts were exchanged, ribbons cut, smiles formed, many tonics poured, Santa’s fed, dreidels spun, and for a few magical days, walking the quiet New York City streets was inspiring as I anticipated its soon to return inhabitants whom for the few short winter months will be all dressed up in the finest of wools and cashmere’s.

Bohemian Finds : Merced Duffel

Oxblood suede men's bag from Cole Haan.It took me a while to find the perfect bag that can work for both my job as a designer and my current full time job as a salesman and promoter of gourmet French cheese. My recently purchased Merced Duffel from Cole Haan not only looks chic in the oxblood suede finish, but also conveniently holds all of my everyday traveling needs.

Today Dec, 27 2011 Helen Frankenthaler, one of my favorite American abstract artists passed away at the age of 83. I always loved her expressive use of color and often find my own work very much influenced by her forms and techniques.

Helen is one of the recognizable first great American Female artists, and in my eyes one who’s work is both timeless in style and sensibility. Jewish and born in New York City, I feel a special connection to her and her work.

DIY : Traveling Neon Menorah

Neon painted do it yourself hex nut menorah designed by Naftali StNeon painted do it yourself hex nut menorah designed by Naftali StNeon painted do it yourself hex nut menorah designed by Naftali StSince my bohmerian self is nomadic by nature, I created this easy to make traveling Hanukkah menorah by super-gluing pairs of 1/2″ hex nuts, and coating them with both a layer of Krylon white primer, and a few light layers of Rust-Oleum fluorescent paint.

BTW: Most 1/2″ beeswax Hanukkah candles should fit the 1/2″ nuts perfectly. If you try making these as crafts with your children, then use 3/8″ hex nuts which would better fit the traditional, children’s assorted candles which you should easily find seasonally stacked at you local market or hardware store.

NOTE: To evenly paint the glued nuts and prevent drip marks; suspend them from a string outdoors, spray one even layer of primer and 3-4 light layers of your preferred color. I would suggest wearing a mask or towel around your mouth while doing so.

Ghosted : Historic Brooklyn…

Black & White photo of historic Williamsburg Brooklyn NY savings bank. From a small personal series I have recently been working on: Ghost Buildings NYC – A series of architectural structures and city buildings, ghosted by being draped in black tarp while they are under construction.

___

In the past two years I have noticed so many buildings in NYC being covered this way and often find their shapes so intriguing. Somehow the now massive dark silhouette contrasted against a big clear sky makes these buildings more memorable.  Although their true identity is temporarily masked, it reminds me to never judge a book by its cover, or rather not to judge people for any faults, since many of us are temporarily masked by the uncertainty of our future.

One day; construction shall be completed, the false facades removed, and sun will once again fill the windows of all our lives.

I really love the colors, shapes, and forms of these energetic and freshly unique sculptures. Their colors are fun, their details impeccable, their silhouettes evocative, and their general form a great contrast to both modern and traditional interiors.

Styled : Pumpkin Slacks

Pumpkin orange pants for the fall.Pumpkin orange pants for the fall.A bronze elephant sculpture at Cogi Farm.Mixing two scarves.Pumpkin orange pants for the fall.A navy winter coat by Patrizia Pepe.

Thanksgiving this year was quite wonderful, the weather superb, family and friends joyous, and so to celebrate in style I donned my favorite Hilfiger, pumpkin slacks. Orange can be worn many ways, but to give it holiday elegance I paired it with a classic cream and blue plaid shirt, a woven brown leather belt, navy velvet shoes, a shimmering coat, and two scarves to add texture and a needed bohmerian touch.

The Patrizia Pepe, blue/grey shimmering coat I found at Daffy’s.

___

Because we are all so busy with our every day work and lives we often neglect the one thing that we may be most passionate about. Our challenge is to find ways to channel those passions into everything we do, and the results are always so fulfilling and unexpected.

To help keep myself inspired I have begun to set half hour or so aside every day to sketch more art, and when I can, I briefly stop into the closest museum and sketch one of their pieces. I love the feeling of drawing or painting on paper and reinterpreting other great artists helps me spend more time enjoying the process rather then spending time thinking about what I would like to create as I would in my every day design world.

Sketching is a great way to relax and help you get to learn what you are most excited about. The instant results are rewarding and will give you a great sense of accomplishment.

Whatever your passion may be, I hope you too can spend just a few extra minutes a day rewarding yourself by indulging in it. I would love to hear what you all have been doing lately to express your own passion. Share them by leaving a comment below.

Moments : 11.11.11

November 11 2011 aka. 11-11-11Often important moments are forgotten for the new, seemingly more important ones that are hastily oozing from an overgrown media jungle. But today, Friday, November, 11 2011 aka. 11.11.11, I shall remember you as the day of equality. On this day all references to time are uniquely untied as one, or 1.

A wonderfully sunny day out in NYC, one that I truly am enjoying and seeing all people as channels of love and inspiration. All this individualism highlighted by armies of diverse funk and fashion that I cant help but enjoy more then any movie I have ever seen.

I am now lost in the true bohmerian experience: Freedom is all we need! Love is all we have! Peace is all we want!

Inspiration : Personalized Black Door

Door inspiration in Williamsburg Brooklyn.Another Williamsburg, Brooklyn find: A minimal black door cleverly personalized with a hand drawn orange lightning detail.

___

To me; doors are suggestive of being open to opportunity and closed to any outside negativity. For the most part, a door really signifies our vulnerability and is the only personalized part of a house that can always be seen by anyone. When briefly opened, it allows for an exchange of public and private energies, forcing us further along the mystery of life’s journey.

Ingredients : Mache Greens & Feta

A healthy salad recipe by theBohmerian.com

Lately I have been experimenting with different ways to use cheese in dishes and with ingredients that I normally would not have thought to mix together. Although cheese is often thought of as the indulgent sidekick, I am trying to find more ways to make it the main protein in my otherwise often simple dinner meals.

For this recipe; If you slice the plum particularly thin, paired with the briny feta, in a subtle way, it somehow tastes like prosciutto.

Cheese Notes: Typically Feta cheese is made of sheep’s milk or part sheep and part goats milk. I had some goats milk feta left over from a cheese tasting and although it was less moist then the Greek sheep’s milk version, the tang of the goat worked really well with the sweet but tart plums.

Mache salad with toasted walnuts and feta.
Makes enough for 2 sides or 1 main.

You will need:
1 4oz bag washed mache or lamb’s lettuce (I got mine from Trader Joes)
1/2 cup grape or cherry tomatoes quartered
1 plum, pitted, halved, and thinly sliced lengthwise (see image above)
1/4 cup coarsely chopped, lightly toasted walnuts
1/2 cup feta thinly sliced and cut to about 1/2″ x 1/2″ squares
Juice of half a lemon
Sea salt to taste
Freshly ground black pepper.

Mix all the above, dress with freshly squeezed lemon, and season to taste.

To best enjoy, serve immediately.

Inspiration : Window Treatments

Creative window treatments at the Bebe bar in Williamsburg Brooklyn.Creative window treatments at the Bebe bar in Williamsburg Brooklyn.Just a few blocks from me in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; I really love these uniquely shaped, tree like wrought iron gates, covering the windows of the Berry Street, Bembe bar and nightclub.

Somehow their web-like center shape reminds me of Halloween and thought now to be a perfect time to share them with you. Because of the bars mixed rastafarian and hipster crowd, this is the corner where I first came up with the term hipfarian.

Design Tip: To avoid any rust streaks such as those in the images above; make sure you ask your architectural blacksmith to paint or treat the iron after they have drilled the mounting holes. To assure a perfect fit, often the holes are drilled on site. In that case, just remind them to first treat the holes before mounting it to its foundation.

Inspiration : Sideboards 1

A hanging sideboard by Paul Evans.A minimal modern colorful sideboard by Belgian furniture designer Koenreard RuyesA contemporary purple sideboard designed by Pedro Sousa.Often one of the most overlooked pieces of furniture, the sideboard, is to me one of the easiest ways to introduce functional art to any interior. They are low and therefore not demanding, yet are often long enough to withstand some eye moving attention.

Rarely do I find any with unusual personalities, but the three above are only some of the few that are quite unique and particularly beautiful. Since the first and last are particularly rare and expensive, I am showing them as inspiration, and I soon hope to post some others that are just as unique and yet still comfortably accessible.

2. Framed : A minimal modern, black steel framed sideboard. Designed by Belgian designer Koenraad Ruys for Moca.
